Be Grateful for Everything

As I sit writing this blog post about gratitude, I am struck by the desire to write something unique—something that will make you pay attention because it’s the time of year when so many of us gather to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends. I bet your eyes have already glazed over at the thought of yet another sappy, sentimental treatise on everything that I have to be grateful for. Well, snap out of it, because this is something you may not have heard this season.

I was looking at a few of my favorite inspirational quotes about gratitude, and I came across this one by Wallace Wattles, author of, The Science of Getting Rich. He says,

“It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

Mr. Wattles says that we should be grateful for,  “every good thing that comes to you,” but I submit to you that we should be grateful for everything that comes to you whether you interpret it as good or bad.  If you think about it, what makes something good or bad? What makes something good or bad is simply how you perceive it.

Most people are grateful for the things they perceive as positive and they pray for protection from those things that they perceive as negative when it reality it’s all good. As a co-creator with the Universe of your own experience, you get what you focus on, so every experience is as we would have it be.

How many times has something that you perceived as catastrophic eventually turned out to be for the best in your life? I think that most people can come up with an example of how things eventually worked out for the best, so why not be grateful now?

So, be grateful for everything. It’s all in perfect order because it is. Focus on the good and you will invite more good into your life. When something you perceive as good shows up in your experience be grateful and say to the Universe, “More, please

Your gratitude accomplishes two things. First, you express your pleasure to the Universe adding positive, attractive energy to it and thereby attracting more experiences like it. The second thing it accomplishes is that it makes room for more good things to flow into your life.  Expressions of gratitude keeps you in the abundant flow of ever-increasing good.

If you have children, teach them to express their gratitude every day not just on Thanksgiving. Anyone can keep a gratitude journal, or recite out loud the things that they are grateful for at the end of each day.

If you have a business, express your gratitude to your customers for their patronage of your business. Make them feel appreciated and reinforce their reasons for having chosen you over your competitors.

Finally, be grateful for every breath because your breath is the vehicle of spirit. Breathe in peace and tranquility and light. Breathe out fear, anger and pain.  Be grateful for this moment right now.
